"Emiel Lamberts (1941), professor emeritus of contemporary history at KU Leuven, is an international expert in the political and religious history of Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries. His work and the central themes in his research are the starting point in World Views and Worldly Wisdom. No less than eighteen leading international researchers put different aspects of his work in the spotlight. A recurring theme, however, is the attraction and repulsion between the Roman Catholic Church and modernity in Europe between 1750 and 2000. The ambivalent relationship with modernity is therefore the leitmotiv of the first part of this volume, whereas the second part focuses on the repositioning of the Church and the tensions between religion, ideology and politics. In this way the volume reflects Lamberts's fascination for the history of political institutions as well as his research on Christian democracy. The contributions address--in a comparative way and from a transatlantic viewpoint--this broad period of time in history, which gave rise to different social movements and different models of society in Belgium and elsewhere."--Page 4 of cover.

"Much like the rest of the country, American Catholics are politically divided, perhaps more so now than at any point in their history. But Julie Hanlon Rubio suggests that there is a way beyond red versus blue for orthodox and progressive Catholics. In a call for believers on both sides of the liberal-conservative divide to put aside labels and rhetoric, Rubio demonstrates that common ground does exist in the local sphere between the personal and the political. Rubio draws on Catholic Social Thought to explore ways to bring Catholics together. Despite their differences, Catholics across the political spectrum can share responsibility for social sin and work within communities to contribute to social progress. She expands this common space into in-depth discussions on family fragility, poverty, abortion, and end-of-life care. These four issues, though divisive, are part of a seamless worldview that holds all human life as sacred. Rubio argues that if those on different sides focus on what can be done to solve social problems in 'the space between' or local communities, opposing sides will see they are not so far apart as they think. The common ground thus created can then lead to far-reaching progress on even the most divisive issues--and help quiet the discord tearing apart the Church."--

The Epistola Magistri Benedicti Passavantii (1553) or the Passavant is a satire in epistolary form, written by the reformer Theodore Beza and addressed to Pierre Lizet, ex-president of the Parliamant of Paris. He makes use of the satire in order to propagate the ideas of the Reformation: Sola Gratia, Sola Fide, Sola Scriptura. This edition contains, apart from the text in macaronic Latin, a translation in French and the first detailed commentary from a historical, theological and literary perspective. The introduction deals inter alia with the macaronic Latin and the influence of Rabelais, Erasmus, von Hutten and Viret. Finally, the Complainte de Messire Lizet sur le trespas de son feu nez is added for the first time with a commentary.
